Statement by the UN LGBTI Core Group

I have the honor to participate in this interactive dialogue on behalf of the following Member States of the LGBTI Core Group: Albania, Australia, Belgium, Bolivia, Brazil, Cabo Verde, Canada, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Croatia, Denmark, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, Finland, France, Germany, Honduras, Iceland, Ireland, Israel, Italy, Japan, Luxembourg, Malta, Montenegro, Mexico, Nepal, New Zealand, North Macedonia, Norway, Peru, Portugal, South Africa, Spain, Sweden, Timor Leste, the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, the United States of America, Uruguay, the European Union, as well as the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, and the non-governmental organizations Human Rights Watch and Outright International. The group is co-chaired by Argentina and the Kingdom of the Netherlands.

We strongly appreciate your report, and we are thankful for the outstanding work done during the tenure of your mandate. We stand ready to continue supporting the mandate and to welcome your successor.
We were pleased to read in your report that your call for contributions was answered with submissions from 76 stakeholders, including States, national human rights institutions, civil society organizations and academics. It is a testament of the constructive dialogue that you have fostered in the past few years.
We acknowledge that this report helps to raise awareness about the impact of colonialism and decolonization on the continued formation and perpetuation of harmful social norms associated with sexual orientation and gender identity, and how these relate to the enjoyment of human rights.
Yet again, we find ourselves with compelling research that underlines the importance of decriminalizing sexual orientation and gender identity, as well as adopting anti-discrimination measures.
One of your recommendations is to conduct sensitization and awareness-raising campaigns in order to promote respect for diversity, including gender identity and sexual orientation. Could you give us examples of successful campaigns in this regard?

Apreciamos mucho su informe y agradecemos el excelente trabajo realizado durante su mandato. Estamos dispuestos a seguir apoyando el mandato y a dar la bienvenida a su sucesor.
Nos complace leer en su informe que su petición de contribuciones fue respondida con aportaciones de 76 partes interesadas, incluidos Estados, instituciones nacionales de derechos humanos, organizaciones de la sociedad civil y académicos. Es un testimonio del diálogo constructivo que ha fomentado en los últimos años.
Reconocemos que este informe ayuda a concienciar sobre el impacto del colonialismo y la descolonización en la continua formación y perpetuación de normas sociales perjudiciales asociadas a la orientación sexual y la identidad de género, y cómo éstas se relacionan con el disfrute de los derechos humanos.
Una vez más, nos encontramos con investigaciones contundentes que subrayan la importancia de despenalizar la orientación sexual y la identidad de género, así como de adoptar medidas contra la discriminación.
Una de sus recomendaciones es llevar a cabo campañas de sensibilización y concienciación para promover el respeto a la diversidad, incluyendo la identidad de género y la orientación sexual, ¿podría darnos ejemplos de campañas exitosas en este sentido?
